With so much talk about China's two big cities û Shanghai and Beijing û itÆs sometimes easy to forget that there are over 600 other cities 22 with a population of over 2 million and another 33 with a population between 1 million and 2 million. These are the cities in the so called second- and third-tiers, a somewhat arbitrary ranking that sorts Chinese cities according to their economic development. In the second tier are the more developed provincial capitals, such as Chengdu and Wuhan, as well as self-governing municipalities like Chongqing and Tianjin and in the third tier are smaller, less developed cities such as Changsha and Nanchang.
