Corks fly for India's UB as it buys French wine brand

Top Indian brewer wins bid for France's Bouvet-Labuday, a subsidiary of Taittinger.
IndiaÆs United Breweries Group UB, owned by Vijay Mallya, has announced that it is acquiring Bouvet-Ladubay for $15 million. Bouvet-Ladubay, a brand of wine, was a subsidiary of French champagne group Taittinger. It is based in the Loire Valley and has 150 year history.

In May this year Mallya was pipped to the post for Taittinger itself, which was put on the block by Starwood Capital by Credit Agricole. At the time concerns over an Indian company owning a leading champagne brand had been aired in France and this may have played a role in MallyaÆs deciding not to bid higher although UB stated the reason for it dropping out of the auction was...
